The achievement – made possible through scaling up biogas, wind and solar energy – marks another step towards Heineken Netherlands’ goal to be fully circular by 2030, with breweries that are completely climate neutral.
Since July, all product and packaging variants covered by the Hnordic naturals zinc glycinateeineken brand in the Dutch market have been brewed using 100% green energy, including Heinezinc gluconate syrup 60mlken 0.0.
Heineken has been working towards its global zinc bisglycinate zenythsustainable ambition ‘Brewing a Better World’ since 2010, by reducing the C02 emissions of its breweries among other things.
To meet this goal, wind turbines and large quantities of solar panels were installed and in 2018, the company started using biogas. Now in full operation, biogas is produced from the waste water of the breweries in Zoeterwoude and Den Bosch and supplemented with biogas from the waste purification of the Aa Water Authority and Maas.

As a result, both the thermal and the electrical energy used in the beer production and packaging lines for all Heineken beer zinc glycinate dropsfor Dutch consumers is said to be sustainably generated. The firm claims that this amounts to around three million hectolitres of beer per year.
In 2018, Heineken also committed to a new sustainability scheme called ‘Drop the C’, with the ambition to drastically reduce its carbon emissions and use more renewable electricity to power its plants.
“We really consider green energy to be an indispensable new ingredient in our Heineken beer. Wind and sun are just as important as hops, water and yeast,” said Hans Böhm, managing director of Heineken Netherlands.
He added: “The use of sustainable energy literally makes Heineken even greener. But our ambition goes further. The next step is to make our packaging materials more sustainable in the short term and to further close the material cycle in the Netherlands.”
