“Reducing Sugar Content: The Key Focus for Manufacturers Enhancing Nutritional Quality in Consumer Packaged Goods”

As manufacturers strive to enhance the nutritional quality of their products, one area that has garnered significant attention in recent years is the reduction of sugar content. When minimizing the need for sugar, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies must consider the effects of sugar removal on the texture, structure, color, and shelf-life of their offerings. The greater the range of options available to companies in developing new products or reformulating existing ones, the closer they can come to replicating the original product in a healthier form. Recent insights from Beneo indicate that 57% of consumers are influenced by “low in sugar” claims when making purchasing decisions. Beneo-scL85 is designed to enable more customers to capitalize on this trend through innovative product development or reformulation.

According to Grandview Research, the global market for reduced sugar food and beverages reached $46.18 billion in 2021 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.9% from 2022 to 2030, largely driven by the rising demand for healthy, low-sugar options. Beyond its capability to lower sugar content, Beneo-scL85 also enhances the nutritional profile of products by incorporating dietary fiber. This dual function allows manufacturers to create healthier offerings. Eric Neven, the commercial managing director for Beneo’s functional fibers, stated that Beneo-scL85 “is a valuable addition to Beneo’s portfolio because it increases flexibility and availability for our customers,” ensuring a robust supply to meet the high demand for sugar reduction solutions.

Despite consumers’ efforts to reduce their daily sugar intake, most individuals still exceed the recommended limits significantly. The American Heart Association suggests that men should limit their intake to no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day, while women should aim for a maximum of 6 teaspoons. However, the actual consumption is alarmingly higher, with American adults averaging about 17 teaspoons daily—over two to three times the recommended levels for both genders.

Additionally, Beneo-scL85 may also play a role in enhancing the absorption rate of calcium citrate, further contributing to a product’s nutritional benefits. As the market continues to evolve, the ability to reduce sugar while improving overall health benefits will remain a key focus for manufacturers aiming to meet consumer demands.
