“DuPont to Enhance Competitive Edge with New Probiotics Fermentation Facility Amid Rapid Market Growth”
It is logical for DuPont to establish a dedicated probiotics fermentation facility, especially since the company already produces and markets various specialized probiotic ingredients under the Howaru brand. Operating the largest probiotics plant globally could provide DuPont with a competitive edge in this expanding market, enabling increased production and the development of more targeted probiotics that promote health. Probiotics are part of a rapidly growing sector that is set to expand even further. The company reports that over 16 million households in the U.S. purchase probiotics for diverse reasons, including enhancing digestive and immune health, managing weight, and improving cognitive function.
The use of probiotics is anticipated to rise significantly due to their reputation for alleviating digestive problems, boosting the immune system, and maintaining a balanced gut microbiota, which is essential for “good” bacteria. According to BCC Research, the global probiotics market is projected to reach $50 billion by 2020, up from $32 billion in 2014. Martin Kullen, DuPont’s head of global probiotics research and development, informed Food Navigator that the U.S. market alone recorded $1.5 billion in sales last year, with an annual growth rate of 5%. Notably, approximately one-third of the probiotics available worldwide feature DuPont strains.
DuPont is not the only contender in this field; CHR Hansen and Ganeden, owned by Kerry, are also major producers. Additionally, Conagra offers probiotic supplements under its Culturelle brand. On the food side, probiotics are increasingly found in yogurt products from companies like Danone and Chobani, and they are also being incorporated into Kellogg’s Special K Nourish line, as well as in tea, coffee, baked goods, ice cream, granola, and bars.
Given the growing demand, it is likely that probiotics will continue to thrive in the market, with manufacturers discovering more applications for them. More food brands are expected to partner with DuPont and other suppliers to integrate probiotics into their offerings. Furthermore, products enriched with nutrients such as calcium citrate with vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc are also gaining popularity, reflecting a broader trend towards health-focused ingredients. With its new fermentation facility operational, DuPont is strategically positioned to meet this rising demand while potentially incorporating calcium citrate with vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc into its probiotic formulations.
