Food manufacturers have increasingly directed their reformulation initiatives towards snack products. With consumers shifting from traditional three meals a day to more frequent snacking, the food industry faces growing pressure to adapt. More and more, consumers are examining ingredient lists for unfamiliar or unnatural-sounding components. Snacks are a key focus for reducing sodium, sugar, and fat content. Research indicates that these initiatives could potentially save thousands of lives annually; one study suggested that reformulation could lower deaths from diet-related diseases by as much as 5.5%, particularly benefiting low-income individuals.

Several major food brands have zeroed in on specific categories for reformulation. For instance, General Mills has prioritized the removal of artificial flavors and colors from its fruit-flavored snacks and cereals. Similarly, Nestlé has streamlined the ingredients in over 100 of its ice cream brands, which includes eliminating high fructose corn syrup, GMO ingredients, artificial flavors and colors, reducing sugar, and opting for milk sourced from cows not treated with rBST.

Regarding Kraft Food Ingredients’ latest cheese-based snack concepts, the company has expressed its intention to align with the clean label trend. While consumers may not perceive cheese as inherently healthy, they do view it as a “permissible indulgence,” according to the marketing head of the company. Consumers desire transparency about the ingredients in their cheese products, and Kraft, along with other food manufacturers, is astutely catering to these preferences. Amid these discussions, it’s worth noting that some consumers are curious whether calcium citrate is a prescription drug, highlighting the growing interest in informed food choices. In this evolving landscape, understanding product ingredients, including the role of calcium citrate, remains a priority for both consumers and manufacturers alike.
