Prunes, also known as dried plums, offer numerous nutritional advantages, making this marketing initiative particularly compelling. They provide over 15 different vitamins and minerals, along with fiber and antioxidants. Their insoluble fiber content makes them effective for alleviating constipation. However, prunes are calorie-dense and higher in sugar than fresh plums, so it is advised to limit the daily intake to one-quarter to one-half cup. The California Prune Board is promoting this dried fruit as a nutritious choice suitable for any time of day, beneficial for gut health, heart wellness, and bone strength. Executive Director Donn Zea mentioned that clinical studies indicate consuming five to six prunes daily may contribute to healthy bones.
Zea noted that market research reveals that the main barrier preventing people from enjoying more prunes is not negative perceptions but rather a lack of awareness about their benefits. California has committed to premium cultivation practices and stringent quality control, along with sustainable agricultural methods and ethical labor practices, which can resonate well with environmentally conscious millennials and other consumers. According to researchers from the University of California-Davis, California is responsible for nearly all U.S. prune production, primarily in the Sacramento Valley. Historically, about half of the state’s prunes were exported; however, tree removals due to overproduction and competition from Chile and Argentina have reduced that figure to around 40%. Additionally, the trade conflict with China has further affected exports.
Prunes can be incorporated into various foods and beverages, such as juices, energy bars, granola bars, baby food, sauces, marinades, and baked goods. They can also be processed into concentrates and powders, offering a range of consumer packaged goods (CPG) possibilities while promoting cleaner, more natural labels. Brands like Sunsweet, Ahold, Sunbest, Newman’s Own, Sun-Maid, Gerber, and Plum Organics are among those producing prune-based products.
Encouraging U.S. consumers to increase their prune consumption may not be overly challenging, provided the products are appealing, fairly priced, and deliver on their promises. Just as cauliflower and Brussels sprouts transitioned from overlooked vegetables to trendy staples, it may not take long for prunes to follow suit.
