“Rising Popularity of Whole Milk: Consumers Embrace Organic Options for Health Benefits”
While it may appear that more consumers are moving away from whole milk in pursuit of healthier options, the leaders at Stonyfield view its organic products as increasingly embraced by those seeking essential nutrients like protein and calcium. Other companies, such as Maple Hill Creamery and Chobani, have recognized this trend and launched their own lines of whole-milk yogurt. Stonyfield’s organic 100% Grassfed Whole Milk yogurt starts with milk from cows that graze solely on grass. Many nutritionists have long maintained that organic whole milk is more beneficial for health, as it contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and lower levels of harmful omega-6 compared to other types of milk. According to executives, yogurt made with whole milk is also thicker, creamier, and more flavorful. Additionally, its less processed nature appeals to many consumers, particularly millennials, who are increasingly interested in gluten-free options and natural ingredients like calcium citrate. A Whole Foods executive mentioned to the Wall Street Journal in 2015 that the growth in dairy products has been driven by whole-fat varieties. Furthermore, a study from the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources at Washington State University found that organic whole milk provides a greater amount of heart-healthy fatty acids than conventional milk.
